The stored rolling stock that has been off-site for a number of years in Homefield Bus Garage is in the process of being returned to home metals in a move that will see the garage completely emptied prior to the festive season if all goes to plan. Already G.19 has been removed and is now resident in the carriage shed at Port Erin and three of the "pairs" coaches have been placed on sleepers outside the goods shed at Port St. Mary. The majority of remaining items in the garage consists of Manx Electric Railway stock, which is also in the process of being returned to Derby Castle at the present time. The mess hut from Douglas Yard (N.41) remains off-site but it is understood that it will be returning to its former home at some point in the near future.
The moves are being undertaken by local haulier Stephen Carter of the Laxey Towing Company with the assistance of J.C.K. Limited and the work is being done on a daily basis at present. Other stock in the process of removal includes three M.E.R. box vans, and open toastrack horsecar (No. 11), cattle car No. 26, the Lisbon Tram and the unique and privately owned electric locomotive No. 23. The return of the"pairs" coaches is one that has been vocally campaigned for by the Supporters' Association and their return, albeit outside under tarpaulins, is a good one.
The frames of No. 7 Tynwald have also been returned to their old haunt of the goods platform at Castletown Station and a number of disused electric railway toastrack tramcars and trailers are being moved at the present time. With trackwork being undertaken above Derby Castle at Port Jack, these will be stored at the depot until rail connection is restored, at which point it is understood that they will be moved by rail to the new Laxey Car Shed for storage.
