In readiness for the inaugural Manx Heritage Transport Festival 1908-vintage locomotive No. 12 “Hutchinson” was re-fitted with her tank-mounted brass numerals. Readers may recall that both she and No. “Mona” carried these numerals in their later careers, with No. 12 losing hers when rebuilt in 1981, when she notoriously appeared in the non-prototypical blue livery and square cab. Since she was again rebuilt and fitted with a traditional Beyer Peacock house it has been the intention of the workshop staff to fit the numerals again. Upon re-entering the fleet in more familiar guise she was also fitted with her original deeper toned whistle, the same as No. 13’s, but this has also been changed now in favour of a mid-toned one, and the chimney numerals removed as these were historically inaccurate. There have been comments that the numerals look too large but we can reassure the doubters that this is not the case, as they are exactly the same ones that were removed in 1978 and have merely been placed on new backing boards. The workshop staff assure us that their research into achieving the right “look” has been meticulous!
