All of the operational coaching stock have now been fitted with new warning signs which read as follows: “Isle of Man Railway, Safety Notice, passengers are warned not to lean out of the carriage windows due to limited clearances and the emission of cinders from the locomotive chimney; please do not open the door until the train has stopped”. It is very pleasing to note that these signs have been made in a style sympathetic to the historic character of the stock and fitted to the top of the door above the window apertures, in a suitable typeface. Given the recent track record of the building site-style notices elsewhere on the railway it is most encouraging seeing something of this nature appear. Disappointingly, the coaches all still appear after re-upholstering with the out of keeping green and blue moquette applied to the island’s buses which does little to keep the appearance of a heritage railway. In a similar venture, the passenger coaches on our own Groudle Glen Railway are to be similarly fitted, disposing of the current “Please Remain Seated” stickers applied latterly; these are to be purchased from the same company at a cost of some £400.00.
