Home News 2010 Railway Items Auctioned Off

Regular visitors to the forum section of this site will be aware that a considerable collection of transport memorabilia was recently auctioned; the auction took place on Thursday 30th September at the Mount Murray Hotel & Country Club and contained nearly 300 lots from the collection of George Hearse covering a wide cross-section of railwayana.  Among the lots, which included a vast array of postcards and photographs as well as railway posters, worksplates, tickets and models, were some items of interest on the Isle of Man Railway.  These included a considerable number of framed original share certificates from both I.M.R. and the Manx Northern Railway, all of which sold in the region of £20.00 each, as well as collections of framed tickets and advertising posters ranging over the last 70 years.  Some of these highly sought-after items went for considerable sums but the item that generated the most interest was a large live steam model of No. 16 Mannin in the apple green livery which, although the reserve price was £3,000 - £5,000, sold for the sum of £1,050.00 to a collector.  The posters, many of which were of British Railways origin but advertised the island and its railways, all reached impressive figures, as did the other items of railwayana, not all of which related to the island.  L.N.E.R. worksplates featured, as did a collection of tickets from the Liverpool Overhead Railway and many items of tramway interest.  Although not well attended on the day, there were a number of telephone bidders and the majority of the items on offer were sold.  It is understood that a further auction will take place in the near future, these being executed by Murrays Auction House from whom details of the lots are available together with photographs.
