The fleet of the steam locomotives that operated the Isle of Man Railway were built by Beyer Peacock & Co., of Manchester between 1873 and 1926; during this time they provided fifteen locomotives (one of which was inherited from the Manx Northern Railway upon takeover in 1905 and re-numbered 14, retaining the name Thornhill) and remarkably all bar one exists today in one form or another. They have their own unique character which is one of the aspects that makes the line special for so many people. This section features pages on each of these locomotives, and the three locomotives that were inherited from the Manx Northern Railway and made by other manufacturers. The current fleet livery is a variation on the standard 1944-1965 red but wherever possible the accompanying images show the locomotives in their various other liveries, such as the controversial and unpopular livery carried by No. 12 in the 1980s and 1990s, and the variety of other liveries carried by the locomotives over the years.
