Home St. John's Junction Carriage Turntable (1923)

This turntable was of 35' diameter with a maximum load of 55 ton. It was installed at St. John's in 1924/1925, having been purchased by the Railway Company new in 1923 for £250 from the maker / supplier Ransome & Rapier of Ipswich. It was a cancelled order from the West Clare Railway. Only ever used for turning carriages used on the northern line to help with equal side weathering. It was removed in 1961 and stored at Douglas, ready for alternative planned use.

The company did purchase some components for a second (and possibly third) turntable in 1961 from the County Donegal Railways Joint Committee, including one pair of old locomotive frames; the plan being to locate the two (or three) turntables at the most appropriate termini so that the recently-purchased railcars could be operated singularly. It would seem that a lack of space and resources put paid to the idea, so the railcars had to be operated coupled together.

Locomotives were never turned here, when the practice of turning locomotives to face chimney first from their home shed was employed (this was dropped by the turn of the century) oiled plates were used in the yard at Douglas Station and the locomotives were spun into position.  Although no photographic evidence of this is known to exist, it shows in some early workshop records as being the case.  Some early views show locomotives turned to prove this as fact.
