One of only two on the island, the small stone-built ‘box at St. John's was located at the easterly end of the station platforms, in front of the imposing carriage shed; in addition to protecting the station it also housed a storage area underneath and was famously used by stationmaster George Crellin to grow tomato plants and his famous geraniums in! Although a signal box in appearance it was always referred to by George as the Point Box and this is reflected in our article title accordingly! It saw use right up until 1968 when the railway closed for good, and was damaged by the disastrous carriage shed fire on 10th December 1975 and subsequently demolished in 1976 by contractors at the same time as the entire area was cleared. Our view of the 'box is from the summer of 1969 by which time the upper glazed portion had been boarded over the building awaited its fate.
