Home Projects New Injectors For No. 13 Kissack (2003)

Whilst the return to service of No. 13 Kissack was completed by the workshop staff of the railways, the new injectors were supplied and funded by the Supporters' Association; this locomotive had last seen service on the Santa Trains in 1992 and whilst she was initially to have been re-boilered and returned to service, it was discovered that the running gear of No. 10 G.H.Wood which had last steamed in 1977, was in better condition and so the boiler was diverted to her.  This proved to be good bit of planning as it meant that No. 10 could be re-inaugerated as part of the successful 1993 Year Of Railways providing an additional draw for visitors, though it meant that No. 13 was sidelined.  The boiler carried had been supplied by the Hunslet Engine Co., in 1971 and was time-expired and the fleet consisting of a sufficient four locomotives the frames were stored in the workshops to await eventual restoration.

The dismantled parts of No. 13 were put into the sole surviving two-plank wagon M.70 and the engine was effectively mothballed, its brasswork greased up, tanks scrapped and cab stored in the workshops.  It wasn't until nearly twelve years later that the project re-emerged and the Supporters' Association stepped in to provide the new injectors at a cost of over £4,000.00 from their funds.  Superstition led some wag in the workshop staff to dub the locomotive 12a when she first emerged from the sheds for steam tests in unfinished condition as seen in the above image taken from the first successful light engine run as far as Port Soderick where the image was captured..  Upon successfully running-in she returned to the paint shop to be painted in the then-standard fleet livery of post-war Tuscan Red and returned to traffic in 2005 in 1950s condition complete with copper-capped chimney and brass numerals which she had not carried when withdrawn owing to having a later cast chimney.  She was also re-fitted with her original deeper toned whistle (as was No. 12 Hutchinson initially when she was re-commissioned two years previously) and entered traffic that summer, remaining a regular service locomotive in the fleet today.
