Home Projects Re-Tubing Of No. 4 Loch (2010)

Being considered by many as the Supporters' Association flagship engine following the successful Un-Loch Your Cash appeal beginning in 1998, No. 4 Loch re-entered service in 2001 when the ocassion was marked with a special train to Santon Station (then the temporary terminus) when members were invited to travel behind her as a thank you from the railway's management for the hard work that was put into the project, seeing it through to fruition in a remarkably short period.  When it became apparent that the locomotive required re-tubing to keep it in traffic, during 2009 it was decided to fund the cost of these new boiler tubes from the general fund. The locomotive saw little use during this season and in the winter the old tubes were removed, with new ones being fitted in early 2010 and steam trials taking place shortly thereafter with successful light engine runs as far as Port Soderick followed by some banking of service trains in the early season.

By the start of February 2010 she was in light steam for testing purposes and another successful Supporters' Association project came to fruition.  Following these tests the locomotive undertook its first rostered service, with a special out-of-season charter train to Ronaldsway Halt as part of a 1940s themed evening.  She since continued in service for the remainder of the season prior to the wheels being removed for re-tyring and turning at Ian Riley Engineering before returning in June 2011.  The locomotive was again back in traffic in July, debuting as part of the annual Manx Heritage Transport Festival on a special light engine working to Port Erin where it was posed as one of three locomotives in the station for the Southern Steam day. The accompanying image shows the front tube plate of the locomotive prior to the instalment of the tubes in question.
