During what turned out to be the full railway system’s last year of operation in 1968, the Supporters’ Association hired a special train which ran between Douglas Station and St. John’s; this train carried the committee and fledgling members of the group and was hauled by ex-Manx Northern Railway locomotive Caledonia with coaches F.75, the governors’ saloon, and F.36, the royal coach, forming the first two coaches of the rake. Not only did this prove to the last run of Caledonia for over 25 years, but it was also one of the very last times that F.75 was used in traffic prior to being placed in the newly-created railway museum at Port Erin in 1975.
F.36 of course did see further royal patronage in the ensuing time, and during the 1978 season it was used in regular train formations and passenger could travel in it for a surplus charge. However, both these historic vehicles are currently still on display in the museum, having been re-housed last in 1999 when the museum complex was extensively refurbished.
