Douglas Station Souvenir Shop (1978) |
|
One of the aspects now sadly lacking from Douglas Station is a souvenir shop; indeed the only place on the line that you can now purchase railway-related products is the museum at Port Erin where a selection is available in the converted goods shed. The last incarnation of souvenir shop was closed in 1999 when David Howard took control of the railway, this had been introduced in 1993 in the building previously occupied by the ladies toilets and porters rooms. Before this, however, starting with the 1978 season the Supporters' Association operated the stall in the booking hall as pictured above. It was this facility that first met travellers upon their arrival in the hall and it was manned entirely by members with proceeds being towards railway-related projects, most notably the ill-fated restoration appeal for locomotive No. 9 Douglas in the summer of 1977.
Latterly, prior to the station's 1990 refurbishment, the shop and tea and coffee facilities were operated by the railways staff and the Supporters' Association provided stock and related items. During its heyday it will be fondly remembered as stockists of such novelties as crossword toilet rolls, and no car was complete without a "Travel Isle Of Man Railway" sun visor!
There was also a wide variety of post cards of the railway and the Supporters' Association had these published at their own cost, now being highly sought-after collectors’ items. After nationalisation the shop was wound down, ultimately the focus being placed on sales within Manx Steam Railway News or directly from the Lhen Coan shop on the Groudle Glen Railway, fully owned and operated by the association.
It is encouraging to note, that after an absence of some years, the management proposes to reinstate a souvenir shop at Douglas Station at some point in the near future,
