Categorisation of the coaching stock on the railway was done by using a simple alphanumerical system, with the first four classes of four-wheel coach being denoted as types "A", "B", "C" and "D" (later to be mounted onto bogie underframes and receive new "F" prefixes) and so on.
The passenger stock prefixies covered letters "A" to "D" with the exception of the "E" vans which were non-passenger brake vans. The other notable difference from the rule were the six-wheeled stock inherited from the Manx Northern Railway which was given the prefix "N". Non-passenger stock (detailed elsewhere on this site) received a lower case "r" to denote their origins, such as "Gr.12" but in later years this was dropped and origins were not so readily identifiable.
Although when we set this site up it was felt that an article on each individual coach would be exhaustive, and they were split into categories accordinlgy, positive feedback from visitors has ensured that each coach now has its own page (with association photographs where available). We do hope that visitors will appreciate that collating a "biography" of each coach is likely to be a never-ending task but we are endeavouring to add to each section as time and information permits. If you have any information you would like to share please contact our site manager whose details appear on our contacts page. |
