Mounted on new underframes between 1911 and 1926, these coaches were known as "pairs" because each set of frames consisted of two original 1873 or 1874 four-wheeled coach bodies mouned on one frame. When initially treated they retained their original numbering (of the "A" to "D" class) in small lettering on the bulkhead and it wasn't until 1932 that consecutive numbers of the "F" class were added, picking up after the final bogie coach delivery (F.49 in 1926). By the time of the war the practice of including original configuration numbers had ceased. Latterly these coaches saw extensive use on the schools' trains but after the contract was lost (when the lines first closed for the winter in 1961) they were largely redundant.
