In the days when the Railway Company took over the operation of the line back from Lord Ailsa, it was promoted with much emphasis on its age, with "Victorian" being very much to the forefront of the publicity material. To this end, much material was produced with the line being plugged as the "Isle Of Mann Victorian Steam Railway Company" with images of No. 8 "Fenella" (by then out of service) and two suitably dressed figures accompanying her. Here we see one of the more diverse advert forms, a beer mat! The rear of the mat reads "Dont Miss a Trip of this Victorian Steam Railway, The Last Remaining in the World!"
In the days of the railway being marketed in the "Victorian" way, female members of staff were often on hand at the terminus stations in full period dress as depicted on this beer mat to pose for photographs with the passengers; male members of staff were also provided with pseudo-period uniforms with top hats and distinctive capes, some of which have survived and are used by staff on the Groudle Glen Railway during the Santa Trains each year. These feature distinctive gold braid piping around the edges and can be seen on many photographs of the seasonal specials.
