Origins

The Level is a level crossing and request stop which serves the hamlets of Level (Rushen), Croit-E-Caley, Kentraugh, Ballagawne and Ballakillowey. It consists of a crossing keepers hut, now unmanned since the introduction of automatic barriers in 2002 and a small section of raised platform which was installed at the request of a regular traveller on the line. Today the nameboard declares the halt as "The Level" (bilingual since 2008 in line with policy) but in the past it has been variously attributed as "Colby Level", "Level" and any connotation of these names. A metal nameboard installed in the 1970s is still in place and declares the title as "Colby Level" but the timetable shows the other title to be correct. Despite its relatively remote location and facilities, the halt is nonetheless a popular one with local travellers.
