Manx Name: Balley Costain
Preceding: Port Soderick
Distance: 4 Miles, 10 Chains (From Douglas)
Opened: Unknown
Closed: Unknown
Origins
This little-known halt was used in conjunction with the nearby rifle range and is sometimes referred to as Rifle Range Halt in contemporary literature; it was used by pupils from King William's College in the southern town of Castletown and still today a grassy platform is discernable from the passing train, indeed metallic supports which once held a nameboard were visible until relatively recently and the white-painted wooden gate may be seen in the undergrowth to the right of the train.
Location
The halt was located immediately south of the bridge of the same name, now the second bridge encountered after emerging from Crogga Woods, the first being the new access bridge to Meary Veg (the island's sewarage works), built in 2002. The latter structure is the most recently-built piece of civil engineering on the railway and is distinctive in having a far wider loading gauge than all the other bridges on the line.
