WHICH GIVES FULL DETAILS OF THE

HISTORY AND RESTORATION OF THIS

RAILWAY AS WELL AS UP TO THE

MINUTES DETAILS OF EVENTS

This railway is the flagship project of the Supporters' Association and was restored twenty years after closure following the nationalisation of the Isle of Man Railway in 1978.  At that time the voluntary involvement on the line was deemed surplus to requirements and the group turned their attention elsewhere.  Involvement on the railway became largely that of finanical assistance at this time, the first major project being the funding of new boiler tubes for No. 11 Maitland in 1981 (the locomotive subsequently returned to traffic the following year) but it was clear that hands-on involvement by the Supporters' Association would no longer be feasible.

After many projects being considered, the idea of returning the Groudle Glen Railway to its former glory was decided upon and a working party visited the site in 1982.  The rest, as they say, is history.  The line was gradually rebuilt, and when the clifftop section opened in 1992 the full three-quarter mile length was acheived.  Since this time there have been many developments including the erection of the station canopy at Lhen Coan, the line's main station, visitor centre at Sea Lion Rocks, carriage and locomotive sheds and, most recently, Flavell's Emporium, the line's souvenir shop.

Our sister site details the history and restoration and is well worth a visit.  Aside from the operation and maintenance of the Groudle Glen Railway the Supporters' Association continues to have an active involvement on the Isle of Man Railway, details of which can be located on our projects page on this site.  Representatives of the committee regularly meet with the railway's management to discuss ongoing matters and joint services that occur between the Manx Electric Railway and the Groudle Glen Railway.
