Home Four-Wheelers Farewell To Coach F.23

One of the railway's former coaches, latterly in use as a bogie runner, has been scrapped.  Wooden framed F.23 of 1896 lost its coach bodies in 1983 but saw future service by the permanent way department where it served as part of the weedkilling train for a number of years.  Stored in recent times on Road Zero at Douglas Station, it was moved to the siding in front of the carriage shed for disposal earlier this year.  Being of timber construction, the frames had been in poor condition for quite some time and dismantling took place on site earlier this month with care being taken to retrieve all reusable metal parts for possible future use on other items of stock.  Whilst it is regrettable that historical stock should be lost, the case for retaining this particular set of frames was a weak one, with other vehicles in much better condition being candidates for possible future restoration taking precendent over F.23.  A full set of photographs recording the layout and final condition of the runner have been taken and will be retained for future reference.  More information about this coach may be found here.  The next edition of Manx Steam Railway News will give details of the latest coach restoration projects which we think will more than make up for the loss of this vehicle.
