The first bogie coaches delivered to the railway arrived in 1876 from Brown Marshalls & Co., Ltd. and were twice the size of the previous four-wheeled stock. The "F" prefix was added as a follow-on from the first four "A" to "D" four-wheeled passenger coaches and the "E" brake vans.

They represent the largest class of passenger carriage on the railway numbering seventy five (when including the Empress Vans which did not carry passengers) in total - including the later "pairs" class which are listed in a different category for ease of reference.
