Home Douglas Terminus Paint Shop & Carpenters' Shed (1899)

Beyond the frontage of the steam sheds and workshops lies the nuts-and-bolts workings of the railway including the plant shop, followed by the paint shop where all locomotives, rolling stock, signage, etc is completed, and lastly the carpenters works where major carriage overhauls take place.  Owing to the design of the structure, it is a mammoth operation to place and remove carriages from the latter shed, as everything that lies in front of them has to be shunted through the steam sheds into the railway's yard and back.  Rarlely seen by the public, these areas remain with few concessions to modernity and are a fascinating insight into the railway's history and operation.
