A familiar characteristic of the station yard at Douglas for many years was the grounded carriage body from the ex-Manx Northern Railway six-wheeled "Cleminson" coach which served as mess hut or "bothy" for the locomotive crews right up until its removal. There were in fact two incarnations of this, the first having been installed around the 1920s was time-expired and replaced in 1964 by N.41 which survived in situ until 1999 with the arrival of manager David Howard who saw to its removal and replacement with totally uncharacteristic portakabin further up the yard. The "mess" was an integral part of the look of the station with its permanently smoking chimney and its removal was regrettable. Thankfully, the coach body was not destroyed although rumours were bandied around at the time that the management had their fingers crossed it would disintergrate when moved (!) and it is presently in store off-site. In these slightly more enlightened times it is hoped that the body will be returned to its original site, for conversion and use as an oil store, returning another aspect of the line's unique character.
