FROM MANX STEAM RAILWAY NEWS

ISSUE No. 50 (DIAMOND JUBLIEE ISSUE!), OCTOBER 1978

By 1416 & “Wessie”

(to the tune of “The Laxey Wheel”) - Apologies To Stuart Slack

As Sung By Bob & Dave At Tholt-Y-Will

(1)

When the island had a railway system, many years ago,

It ran summer spring and winter, wind rain shine or snow,

It ran for many decades, serving the Isle of Man,

Then it shut down for one winter, at the hands of a transport fan!

(CHORUS)

And the railway it keeps steaming, steaming, steaming,

From Douglas to Port Erin every day,

And still the engines go, albeit very slow,

15 miles per hour on that p-way!

(2)

in 1966 there came along a Scottish Lord,

but the railway needed money, more than he could afford,

the railway got a “Beeching” in 1969,

And now all that remains is that old Port Erin line!

(CHORUS)

And the railway it keeps steaming, steaming, steaming,

From Douglas to Port Erin every day,

And still the engines go, albeit very slow,

15 miles per hour on that p-way!

(3)

it went back to the old company, but only for a time,

the engines and the rolling stock, that old Port Erin line,

The government they bought it, they run trains every day,

And the railway just keeps going, all the way with W.J.

(CHORUS)

And the railway it keeps steaming, steaming, steaming,

From Douglas to Port Erin every day,

And still the engines go, albeit very slow,

15 miles per hour on that p-way!

* Note: W.J. refers to William Jackson, then chief executive
